As I sit indoors during one of the hottest days Vancouver has seen in years (the next few days are to hit 30-40 celsius), I’m having a minor anxiety attack over finances, and how much this trip is going to actually cost. Reading other peoples journeys and blogs, I have been accounting for $15 a day in expenses, of course over the course of the trip on average.
So if I was to do some very simple math here based on my assumptions and that I have all equipment with me ready to go, including some spare parts that can be mailed out to me at intervals if I so desire it goes like this:
1 day = $15
10 days = $150
100 days = $1500
1000 days = $15000
Let’s not forget our wonderful currency in Canada which is still lagging behind Americas greenback (currently at .92 cents to the US dollar), so essentially if we took off 10% of 15000 we’d still rest at $13,500. Now, where I come from, that really isn’t alot of money and this is troubling me deeply. Do I need to be saving more money? I have a budget for saving money preparing for this trip which I’m without a doubt going to be able to follow, however what about Jen? Will she be able to save the same amount? What about VISA fees for each country. How much will food cost? What about the 6 months of insurance that needs to be renewed just in case one of us gets sick? Not to mention, how do I make sure my house in Vancouver is still being rented out when I’m gone? Just a minor meltdown happening right now trying to understand the logic and semantics of how this tour should go. I live pretty well and can’t seem to fathom the concept of living frugally, which is what I’ll need to do. I’m sure I will adjust, but right now this seems very far away. Oh well, off to selling the rest of my stuff on craigslist…… (if you are on the vancouver craigslist type tiredofit to see what I am selling)..
