After 6 flats in less than 200km, I bid farewell to my WTB Slickasaurus tires on my LHT. My riding really isn’t that intense, but it seemed like every time I would go over a bridge, or go off pavement, I’d have a flat. Enough was enough and I moved to Schwalbe Marathon tires. I upgraded from the 1.5″ width on the WTB’s to 1.75″ for added comfort, and a bit more stability off road with a small 200gm trade-off in weight. Seeing as I’m starting to do swap out [read more]
WTB Slickasaurus Tires Review – May 28, 2009 http://www.wtb.com/products/tires/hybrid/slickasaurus/ In the 4th quarter of 2008, when I purchased my Surly Long Haul Trucker Complete from a local bike store, the dream of touring around the world was fairly fresh in my mind. After many hours spent sitting in front of a computer on web based discussion forums, and asking advice from other bike enthusiasts, I decided that the “pre-built” package would do for me. You can read my review on the Surly Long Haul trucker here. This review focuses on [read more]
Well, I thought I had things figured out a bit, and then it dawned on me…. I’ve got to apply for some visa’s to gain access to some of the countries I’m going to be visiting! Luckily the European Union has Schengen Visas, which give you access for 180 days from Canada without having to apply or pay for anything. That is great! I am seriously contemplating starting in Ireland, and taking a ferry up to Scotland, and then making my way down to south Britain. Those countries have seperate [read more]
The snow finally melted enough for me to be able to get out on my bike multiple times and for long distances in the past few days, until I awoke to see MORE snow coming down! Weather is supposed to warm up nicely which should make things easier – which at that point maybe the street cleaners will come out and get rid of the gravel covering all the bike lanes! I’ve been spending quite a bit of time reading through the journals at Crazy Guy on a Bike and [read more]
Haven’t been updating the site regularly but focusing on some other priorities in order to make the trip happen lately. Some highlights include being able to find “Bicycle Touring International” in a Bellingham, Washington used book store for $7, a wealth of information on the touring aspect, and various countries, along with great stats on weather and wind patterns! Also took the undertaking to order some supplies from Mountain Equipment Co-Op. Most notably some shorts and some small tools. I desperately need to find a bicycle maintenance course… I also [read more]
Well, that didn’t take long! It turns out my Ortlieb Handlebar Bag is actually too small for my Rebel XSI! Time to order the large!
Managed to pick up the panniers and my Handlebar bag today from these guys while at the same time getting a super great deal on a waterproof jacket for the low price of $50 for their new years sale! The weather outside is frightful, and I’m chomping at the bit to get outside and start riding again. With Phase 1 and 2 rapidly approaching of the trip, I need to get some serious kilometres on the bike to ensure I’m ready to hack it. I’m also going to be spending [read more]
