This isn’t news for 30% of my readership – but today May 2nd, 2011 is the day that we as Canadian Citizens choosing who is the most capable party to lead our country. Unlike the United States directly below us, we have multiple parties with significant support which has made our past few governments result in a minority government causing endless bickering between parties, laws not being passed, and a whole series of deceptive activities by the party with the most votes. Parliament sessions have been stayed and delayed, questions [read more]

Historical Waterfront Riding

I’ve been in Kingston, Ontario for the past 2 days resting as my body is just not able to keep up with long periods of riding anymore – I’ve been burning myself out, and it is likely a combination of weather, energy, and the fact that my stove has been out of commission for the past couple of days after I noticed it leaking fuel everywhere nearly causing a fire in the outhouse I was cooking in. It took me an awful long time to get out of  Toronto after [read more]

The Centre of the Universe

Watching the people get on with their day before 8am in busy downtown Toronto this fine Tuesday morning, drones staring forward, lost in thought, missing a proper sleep, not paying attention to the roadways where cyclists and pedestrians wander in their own little daze off to the daily grind. I made 5 km before pulling over and deciding to enjoy a coffee to let them run their course, so they reach their destination, soon to take a flight of stairs or elevator and start their tedious workday before rushing right [read more]

Hello Southern Ontario! I hopped, skipped, and took a ferry over from Manitoulin Island that is taking me into the heart of the Greater Toronto Area in the next few days to stop in and see some friends that I haven’t seen for a few years. The past three days have been pretty crazy for riding lately – I’ve got energy one minute and then nothing the next. I woke up early after the night I attempted to take a shower before getting wailed on by balls of hail the [read more]

What must have been the hardest of all 3 days, today took a alot out of me with some epic climbs, constant headwinds, and finally when the sun came out some searing heat. My body is speaking up after I skipped out on its halfday rest at Sault Sainte Marie I suppose. I’m not saying I didn’t have a good time doing it today, I’m just burned out – so I stopped only 85km in at a small area named Tunnel Lake. Here – you can watch a video of [read more]

Detouring off the beaten path

I spared myself from the harsh lights of the 24 hour Walmart, the campsite that rests behind it in Sault Ste. Marie for cyclists doesn’t get a visit from me it seems. Nearly everyone I spoke to since Thunder Bay told me of the upcoming climbs and hills and it started to have a little effect on me. I started dreading it, anticipating the worst, and soon realized that’s not how I wanted to do my riding for the upcoming days. I continued down Highway 17, which I’ve been riding [read more]

This has been on my mind since I was passing through Kelowna, BC, way back in May of this year but I haven’t been able to articulate it properly. I’m not saying that how I’m doing it now is the right way either, but my brain is getting full of thoughts and I need to purge. It’s been bothering me about how much time people that I’ve encountered are spending so much time thinking about the future instead of the present day. It’s easier said than done, as most find [read more]

Superior Riding

I’m afraid, the next 4 days is going to destroy my sanity, physical endurance, and more of my bike components – Northern Ontario, is one of the most scenic parts of the entire trip so far, sort of a cross of Vancouver Island meets Alaskan Highway in terms of views, amount of vehicle traffic, and weather. Except they aren’t as big as the Northern Rockies, but  rival them in every possible way – climbs of 250metres in 5km are frequent, sapping one’s energy, adding frustration, fatigue and demoralization each km [read more]

Staring at Satellites

I’m sitting in my tent, in Dryden Ontario about 200km away from the Manitoba border. I’ll just start off and say it’s quite interesting to setup a tent when you’ve realized you’ve left your tent pegs somewhere. I tracked back as far as I can go and without success, so am using some backup pegs I had stashed away, and hex keys to fill the void for the remainder – Toronto is a ways away (2000km!) so I have to suck it up and buy some cheapo ones from Canadian [read more]
