Had a real solid sleep, with the added bonus of psychadelic dreams which had me bolt out of bed at 7:45am. It was great eating a breakfast at camp, and not having to rush over to a restaurant this morniong, even though it was a cold one. No big deal. The skies were grey, and was it ever cold again. Arm Warmers, Rain Pants, and a Wind Jacket started me off for the first 2.5 hours of the day, navigating through 2 small communities (fillin), where I felt like I [read more]

Daily Distance 98km Total Distance: 2503km A bit growly in my head tonight, but I think it’s mostly fear of what’s to come. Really – there is one day of peace left, before Santa Monica, which means Los Angeles and all the chaos that goes along with riding through cities. I seriously took it easy today, stopping multiple times for breaks, watching the sights, and opted to take Highway 1 over to San Luis Obispo instead of the alternate route around Morro Bay. It turned out to be a good [read more]

The raccoons were out full force last night so I spent the night yelling, tossing and turning, until H eard the birds squawking as soon as the day become a new. Frustrated, I got up at 7:00 am and packed up and headed back to San Simeon to grab some Breakfast. Hoping for some Wifi for to post journal entries, I was presented with a locked Access Point, so ate my overpriced breakfast, muttering that I should have my stove fixed again sometime soon as $10 is a bit offensive [read more]

Daily Distance: 120km Total Distance: 2405km Several years ago, likely 1995,when the internet started becoming a household fixture (I’d been poking arond bits since the early 90′s), I started receiving several pieces of email from people, some important and actual usable, and then some that sort of looked like this. CASE 1: Kelly Sedey had one wish, for her boyfriend of three years, David Marsden, to propose to her. Then one day when she was out to lunch David proposed! She accepted, but then had to leave because she had [read more]

Day 24 - Back on the road

Daily Distance: 55km Total Distance: 2285km Back to the grind. I’m on an airmattress that’s half inflated, a tent that is sagging because my pegs are bent and not going into the ground, and my stomach is filled with bread, donated couscous and beer. I’m not complaining, however the last two days are Shangri-La compared to my living arrangements here in Pfieffer/Big Sur State Park, a whopping 30 miles away from Monterrey, making this my shortest day cycling yet. I awoke in a blur again (the place was so quiet [read more]

Daily Distance: 0km Day 23 – Hugh knocked on the door this morning, wondering if I was about to get up anytime soon, I groggily muttered about the time, it being almost 11am! I had a tough time (read: started thinking about work) getting to sleep and by 3:30 I was in all sorts of windings, having to dose myself to shut down. After a brief coffee infusion and some toast, I pumped myself full of pain killers before heading out to the Urgent care facility in hopes of plucking [read more]

Daily Distance: 84km Total Distance: 2230km Another late night for me, however this time I’m in some very good comfort, at my hosts Diane and Hugh’s house in Pebble Beach. It’s a rather secluded area known for its golf courses, and oceanic areas, and the first area I’ve seen in a long time that doesn’t have any convenience stores, or anything whatsoever near by. It’s wonderful! I was able to spend the evening chatting with both of them about issues in the world, our thoughts and viewpoints and some commonalities. [read more]

Talk about a real bizarro day for riding. Up at 7:45 and freezing due to the lack of pants issue, I dealt with the packing of my area. I’ve got it down to less than 15 minutes now to have all 4 panniers filled, mounted, rack pack secured, and ready to go. I typically deal with eating afterwords. Without the stove, I’ve had to modify things, as usually I’d fire up the stove to boil some water for my useless coffee maker to work. I met a few more people [read more]

Daily Distance: 99km Total Distance: 2146km Trying to keep this entry upbeat, but my vibe’s been a bit smashed by California State Parks, and their workers, particularly at New Brighton State Park, which is where I’m staying tonight. When I was in Davenport, I met a woman named Liz McCreadie, sitting on the same steps as I while I was typing my journal. She does some wondeful paintings that you can purchase here. She offered crash space at her place, and looking back I probably should have taken it. Today’s [read more]

Sitting at the side of the road in Santa Cruz, I’ve been bothered for the past few hours by something nagging at me. I did end up speaking to the girl last night, Sarah (this is number 3, I will hyper link their photos when making reference to them shortly) is on a one year sabbatical as an Occupational Health worker for rehabilitating injured people told me all about her cycling in Scandinavia, where you can camp for free for one night anywhere without cost, and told me other stories [read more]
