Daily Distance 60km Total Distance: 2046km After last nights hotel stay, I awoke at 9 to jackhammers, honking, and all sorts of traffic – remember, the city, what goes on with normal lives? I mucked around on the internet for a bit, and continued to try to upload some photos. I stayed up quite late until 2am, chatting with people, organizing, yet forgetting to grab a copy of a website that I wanted to read through on bicycle maintenance as I need to get some more skills up to speed. Daily Distance: 139km Total Distance: 1986km What a long day. Combined with the raccoons still trying to get themselves into my business I had a short sleep. I wanted to get my move on today early as the past few have been late starts, likely due to my injury – but it’s a slippery slope and I intend on changing that habit. Heather, Lauren and I headed over to the Roadhouse Coffeeshop by 9:00am and had some super hi-test coffee, before hitting the roads. I passed them shortly there after [read more]

Tonnes of free wifi here in the town I stopped in, paying far too much for lunch, consisting of a pickle, A $8 dollar spring mix salad, 2 cans of tuna, energy drink, and a baguette. It’s hot, and this last little bit into San Fran is hellish. Winding roads, beating sun, I nearly took a tumble feeling light headed going up and down the hills. I’m 30 miles away and derermined to cross this Golden Gate with lights on…… 1pm

Day 18 – Leisurely riding.. Daily Distance: 87km Total Distance: 1847km At about 10:00am I awoke (catchup!) and packed up. I wanted to move, and one day of slowdown was enough. I said goodbye to Scott and Sarah, but not before grabbing their pictures and contact information. I’ve realized, there are alot of people that I would have liked to get photos of, but just didn’t think of it at the time. Sleep was tough. The raccoons were circling our area all night, sticking their faces under our flies, and [read more]

Day 17 – The rehabilitation Daily Distance: 87km Total Distance: 1760km After I wrote the entry last night, things got a bit more intense. I met Sharon, my nurse, and Dr. Tamako, a young woman, who exclaimed that what I had done to my face was ‘gnarly’. I called her on it and asked if she was a surfer, and she was. They proceeded to numb my face, before putting 12 needles into my mouth, and chin. I freaked out a bit, while Eric took evidence of the whole scenario. [read more]

Day 16 - Multiple Repair Kits required

Daily Cycling Distance: 97km Total Cycling Distance: 1673km Daily Ambulance Distance: 20km Daily Car Distance: 20km Sometimes things just break. I started the day, still hearing the hippies and crazies from the night before who had obviously not gone to sleep and made the motions to clean up my area and move forward, knowing that the Leggit Hill was 2000 feet to climb, with another 900 footer afterwords. At the end of the day it turned out to be 4275 ft in total. The climb itself was easy, and we [read more]

Daily Kilometres: 75km Total Kilometres: 1575km What an intense day. The heat that I experienced today in Humboldt/Mendocino Country has changed the way that I think about cycling in the heat. We all rode in pairs today to ensure that everyone was able to manage and ensuring that water was available for the short ride today from – to – State Park. Let me rewind back a day. I was in Eureka, fuming after dealing with personal emails, thus setting my mind to not checking my email for the remainder [read more]

Mid day checkin, 1:01pm stealing wifi from the Econo Lodge outside, trying to find a sdit down restaurant with additional internet access has proven to be yet again difficult. Didn’t sleep well last night, experienced my first flat on the tour on the side of the US 101, now a 4 lane highway with maniacs whizzing by at high speed, and a bird poo on me, while fixing the flat. I’m tempted to stop, but don’t want to pay weekend hotel rates. Let’s see how the rest of the day [read more]

Day 13 – Crazy Climbing Days Distance: 86km Total Distance: 1360km I fell asleep pretty hard after writing my epic entry yesterday, managing to charge my netbook to 100% in the process. I slept in my clothes, and tossed and turned come light, hoping to get a further couple of hours sleep, to rest, hoping for an easy light day. I exitted the tent at 8:30 and commenced packing, slowly and sluggishly. It was very foggy, yet comfortable to walk around in shorts while I sorted out the morning tasks. [read more]

September 24 – Crescent City – Distance 144km Total Distance 1274km Whew! What a wild past two days. I didn’t feel like writing yesterday as I had a chip on my shoulder which I had a real difficult time keeping out of my conversations whether in person or in writing, so generally I clammed up to other cyclists and took a night off from the journal.\When I awoke in Sunset Bay, it was empty, from the packed night before, save for a straggler who showed up VERY late the night [read more]
