This has been on my mind since I was passing through Kelowna, BC, way back in May of this year but I haven’t been able to articulate it properly. I’m not saying that how I’m doing it now is the right way either, but my brain is getting full of thoughts and I need to purge. It’s been bothering me about how much time people that I’ve encountered are spending so much time thinking about the future instead of the present day. It’s easier said than done, as most find [read more]

Rolling over the odometer

I’m rolling over the odometer in a few ways today. First, I turn 32, in the beautiful town of Banff Alberta, Second – I crossed over the 10,000 km mark today in one year of touring. I’m doing a little site reorganization and joining the previous tours all into one from here on in – a Fraser Valley run, a jaunt around the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island, down to the Tijuana, Mexico border, and the present shangri-la journey around the world, while still only making it one time zone [read more]

A few minor website tweaks

I suppose I did get some work done while I was gluing my ass to a chair in Yellowknife. I left Cranbrook BC with a list of 5 issues that needed to be sorted out. I’m happy to report I completed every single task on that list. While not perfect, it can be refined in the future. 1) Page load times have been reduced. I’m using 2 layers of caching, a form of storing frequently accessed data to send to you, so that it doesn’t tax the server each time [read more]

For Sale: Eureka Spitfire Solo Tent - SOLD

The time has come for me to upgrade to the tent I’ve been trying to chase down for the past year. I originally had a Hilleberg Nallo GT 4, which was spacious, 4 season ready, but far too much for me to use solo as plans have changed drastically on riding companions, and for the best. I’ve been searching for a Nallo GT 2 ever since and it’s waiting for me at my next rest stop. I bought this Eureka tent for Phase 2 down to Mexico, as it’s lightweight, [read more]

They say life is a series of short stories and chapters, and I’ve sat wondering what chapter I’m actually writing. On Friday, I shut down my 7 year labour of love, a weekly late night radio program named SLEIZURE that spanned different provinces, brought in listeners from around the world, and introduced people to some obscure/forgotten/deleted music. The moment was bittersweet – and has put me in a funk lasting the next day over from the profound sense of loss from willingly stepping away from something that gives me so [read more]

A different perspective

I’m writing this from the passenger car of a VIA Rail train. I’ve been riding so far for 17 hours, with another 16 to go, putting me around the Pyramid Falls area of British Columbia. I just finished spending a week in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and I have to say it was one of the most positive experiences that I’ve had in years. It’s weird, I once lived in the centre of Canada for nearly 7 years, and missed out on so many little nuances, attractions and cubby holes that it [read more]

Things are accelerating rather quickly, I’m on the last week of tenancy of my apartment – and also the last week of employment. Big changes coming up in the rather near future. Lots of doors closing in a fairly sequential order leading into traditionally my worst month mentally, usually involving with me becoming hospitalized/sick. To say I’ve got some fear, would be the most truthful comment on this blog all year. I’ve unfortunately had to close another door in my life which changes the course of my direction in life [read more]

The new year has brought change, of a magnitude that I never even dreamed of making me feel like I am in a pinball game, being jostled around from the bumpers, not knowing if I should continue to keep hitting the bumpers for the high score, or just let gravity decide and go into the gutter. I’ve been spending my new found spare time with cleaning, packing to leave this place, and going through the touring gear, re-evaluating how I could do things better (more on this later) and more [read more]

You gotta love the internet. You can spend 10 hours looking up the intricate details on how to repair an electronic component, or you can spend 2 minutes and buy it receiving it with free shipping from China a few days later.  A wonderful source of information for those looking to plan routes, trips, or simply live vicariously through others experiences also exists, specifically for bicycle touring. I’m going to share a bunch of journals, and blogs that have gotten me fired up throughout the past year or so of [read more]
