I’m still about 1500 kilometres away from the country of Zimbabwe now, but wanted to start working on this well in advance out of fear that internet would continue to deteriorate worse than it already is. Zimbabwe, much like other countries in Africa is experiencing extremely turbulent times due a one party government system that was in effect until 2009 yet still struggles years afterwards with its effects. 60% of the 12,523,000 people living in the country fall below the poverty level and most citizens are unemployed, forcing them to [read more]

Yup, it’s that time again, Christmas is coming, and also the start of a new year – for some the year where the world ends, but we all know that’s not too likely. Anyways, if it does, rest assured that your calendar will be 98% used before December 21. I collected a series of photographs that were taken over the course of my travels in 2011 in Canada, USA, and Africa and have published them using an online service. You can purchase the calendar to give to your friends, hang [read more]

I struggled to get to sleep last night, perhaps still trying to rework my body into a riding sleep schedule after the late nights at the Bonnaroo festival. Finally at 2am Central Time I pulled out the Amazon Kindle to see who won the Hockey Game between the Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins. It was the final game in the series, winner taking the Stanley Cup. Vancouver has yet to win a cup in 40 years of playing hockey, yet has been to this stage 3 times before. I [read more]
(written over the course of the past week) Some world traveler I am. For a guy who is telling the entire internet his intentions to flip his previous life upside down and head on an epic expedition I seem to be missing a few major steps. In fact, the only expeditions I’ve gone on in the past 6 weeks has been to the hospital multiple times, battling the snow that blows sideways, the harsh temperatures carried along by the heavy Atlantic winds and slippery streets. To add insult to injury, [read more]
The weather certainly hasn’t improved by double digits which is what I was hoping here in St. John’s, Newfoundland. While the roads are mostly clear and one can actually walk on the sidewalks now (There is no snow clearing bylaw for your sidewalks like most other places in Canada, so people just walk on the road which is a danger in itself). Still, the temperatures remain below zero, ice is regular and snow flurries come once a day with the rapidly changing weather patterns (we are in the middle of [read more]
When you are cycle touring, or going on a long expedition, you need a proper place to lay your head at night. A Tent is one of the of the most important pieces of your equipment to provide shelter from strange weather, a safe place to rest, and to store your gear. Finding the correct tent is a bit of an art, and what works for some people doesn’t quite work for others. I think all Bicycle Tourists can agree on a few things however – The tent should be lightweight – [read more]

2010 has been an interesting one to say the least – It’s still my year, but with lots of fog. Regardless of whatever has happened, and what is to happen I’ve been spending my time working on some goals that I’ve had set for the past few months. I’ve decided to sell my car regardless if the trip happens or not – and go entirely car free. It’s an unnecessary expense at this point in time, and while I’ll miss the convenience of being able to drive and stay out [read more]
Today was a pivotal day for me in my life. I’m no longer employed with the company that I helped build up a small empire. I can’t even explain how much blood, sweat, tears I caused to myself and to others who were around me. I’ve been working in the IT industry for well over 13 years and lived and breathed it. It gave me the opportunity to flex my skills in problem solving, architecting solutions, and having fun – but also drove me to a little bit of insanity [read more]
With this blog just over a year old (December 27, 2008 was when I registered the domain name), it’s hard to believe what has gone on over the past year. In short, some serious personal growth was achieved, lots of laughter, love, adventure and sadness. I would have to say that this is one of the pivotal years where I was able to stop and assess my situations, understand myself a bit better and utilize those skills in relations with people whether friend or further. I started off the year [read more]
