The Flag for Tanzania

Tanzania, one of the largest countries in East Africa, includes the spice islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia and contains Africa's highest point Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 meters (19,340 feet). Kilimanjaro, a dormant volcano, is snowcapped even though it is near the Equator. Most of the country features a savanna plateau, which is east of the Great Rift Valley containing Lake Tanganyika. The coastal areas are temperate, but the interior is semiarid. The population of Tanzania consists of more than 120 ethnic groups. About half of the people practice Christianity, more than one-third follow Islam, and there are numerous traditional and immigrant religions. Most Muslims live along the coast and on Zanzibar. Some 75 percent of Tanzanians farm at subsistence levels. In many areas tsetse fly infestation hampers animal husbandry, as well as tourism. Tanganyika, a British-controlled UN trust territory, gained independence in 1961; and Zanzibar, a British protectorate with an Arab population, became independent in 1963. Tanganyika and Zanzibar united to form Tanzania in 1964. Until resigning as president in 1985, independence leader Julius K. Nyerere guided the country through decades of socialism adapted to the ujamaa policy of village farming. Tourism contributes to the economy, with popular safaris to Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, a huge caldera created by a collapsed volcano. Visitors also come to climb Kilimanjaro, affectionately known as ?Kili.? Trekkers can walk to the summit, but the climb is strenuous and takes about a week (four days up and two days down).

25% of Tanzanian(s) live in urban centers, and 69% can read and write one of the many languages such as Swahili, Kiunguja (Swahili on Zanzibar), English, Arabic, local languages. Tanzanian(s) have an average life expectancy rate of 54 years and most follow the Muslim, indigenous beliefs, Christian religions. 80% Agriculture of Tanzanian(s) work in the agriculture industry which produces , and 20% Industry & Services work in the industry producing agricultural processing (sugar, beer, cigarettes, sisal twine), diamond, gold, and iron mining, salt, soda ash, cement, oil refining, shoes, apparel, wood products, fertilizer. Another work in the services sector such as tourism and retail environments. gold, coffee, cashew nuts, manufactures, cotton are regularly exported to other countries in the world from Tanzania. The Gross Domestic Product per capita is $1,400 with 4.90% annual growth.

Tanzania uses the telephone country code of 255 and internet hosts use the .tz suffix. Tanzania uses the Shilling (TZS).

The shilingi (Swahili; English: shilling) is the currency of Tanzania, although widespread use of U.S. dollars is accepted. It is subdivided into 100 senti (cents in English). The Tanzanian shilling replaced the East African shilling on 14 June 1966 at par.On 14 June 1966, the Benki Kuu Ya Tanzania (Bank of Tanzania) introduced notes for 5, 10, 20 and 100 shilingi (also denominated in shillings on the first series of notes). The 5 shilingi note was replaced by a coin in 1972. 50 shilingi notes were introduced in 1985, followed by 200 shilingi in 1986, 500 shilingi in 1989 and 1000 shilingi in 1990. The 10, 20, 50 and 100 shilingi notes were replaced by coins in 1987, 1990, 1996 and 1994, respectively. 5000 and 10,000 shilingi notes were introduced in 1995, followed by 2000 shilingi in 2003. A new series of notes came out in 2011. These new notes include many security features that prevent counterfeiting.Banknotes in circulation as of the my visit in 2012 are 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000 shilingi, with the 10,000's more difficult to find than the more common 5000. This 500 hilingi note contains a picture of a Buffalo on one side and on the reverse a drawing of Nkrumah Hall located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's biggest city.

My Experience

Road Conditions: Work is being done to many of the tar roads to widen them, and gravel roads are now turning into tar. Good condition, no potholes.
Hills: Rolling hills across most of the country, some very steep coming in from Malawi into the Southern Highlands
Weather: Very cold at night, low 20’s in the day with lots of wind
Best Beer: Kilimanjaro
