A few weeks ago when I was in Yellowknife, NWT I had the opportunity to blab into a microphone and camera for 25 minutes for YKOnline.ca – a smaller local news portal for the city residents. I chose this method as opposed to the local paper, or the bigger news stations for overall creativity (meaning, that the majority of the interview doesn’t get cut from me going left field!), and the fact I like to support smaller operations. The interview came out pretty good, and you can see the original [read more]

Wow – what a mess, 2nd wrong turn of the day and I had to climb a HUGE 1300+ ft hill which overlooked all of LA. The descent was a bit hairy down Crenshaw Blvd. with the traffic and bad roads, but I’m living and breathing in Compton, California, trying to figure out HOW to escape LA. I have 2.5 hours of light left and my GPS is burning out, so am sitting at a coffee shop hoping for a quick charge. I have 35 -40 miles to go before [read more]

Talk about a real bizarro day for riding. Up at 7:45 and freezing due to the lack of pants issue, I dealt with the packing of my area. I’ve got it down to less than 15 minutes now to have all 4 panniers filled, mounted, rack pack secured, and ready to go. I typically deal with eating afterwords. Without the stove, I’ve had to modify things, as usually I’d fire up the stove to boil some water for my useless coffee maker to work. I met a few more people [read more]

Daily Distance 60km Total Distance: 2046km After last nights hotel stay, I awoke at 9 to jackhammers, honking, and all sorts of traffic – remember, the city, what goes on with normal lives? I mucked around on the internet for a bit, and continued to try to upload some photos. I stayed up quite late until 2am, chatting with people, organizing, yet forgetting to grab a copy of a website that I wanted to read through on bicycle maintenance as I need to get some more skills up to speed. Day 16 - Multiple Repair Kits required

Daily Cycling Distance: 97km Total Cycling Distance: 1673km Daily Ambulance Distance: 20km Daily Car Distance: 20km Sometimes things just break. I started the day, still hearing the hippies and crazies from the night before who had obviously not gone to sleep and made the motions to clean up my area and move forward, knowing that the Leggit Hill was 2000 feet to climb, with another 900 footer afterwords. At the end of the day it turned out to be 4275 ft in total. The climb itself was easy, and we [read more]

Daily Kilometres: 75km Total Kilometres: 1575km What an intense day. The heat that I experienced today in Humboldt/Mendocino Country has changed the way that I think about cycling in the heat. We all rode in pairs today to ensure that everyone was able to manage and ensuring that water was available for the short ride today from – to – State Park. Let me rewind back a day. I was in Eureka, fuming after dealing with personal emails, thus setting my mind to not checking my email for the remainder [read more]

Day 13 – Crazy Climbing Days Distance: 86km Total Distance: 1360km I fell asleep pretty hard after writing my epic entry yesterday, managing to charge my netbook to 100% in the process. I slept in my clothes, and tossed and turned come light, hoping to get a further couple of hours sleep, to rest, hoping for an easy light day. I exitted the tent at 8:30 and commenced packing, slowly and sluggishly. It was very foggy, yet comfortable to walk around in shorts while I sorted out the morning tasks. [read more]

Days Distance: 90km Total Distance: 933km Shivering last night, finally zipping up my -20 sleeping bag, I found a way to stretch out, even with the food pannier at the foot of the tent. Better my feet get bitten off than my head if a bear comes along.I dreaded getting up as soon as I saw light creeping in, knowing that it would be once again a day to find a place to shake off the fly, and let the air evaporate the moisture before heading out. When I got [read more]

Day Total: 119km Total Distance: 843km Have you ever had a partner, a neighbour, or a roommate that snores at night, and had trouble sleeping? How about THOUSANDS of otters in the bay beside me at South Park State Park having the time of their lives frolicking in the ocean. I spent a little bit too much time at the Casino, finding Wifi downstairs and using it to post 4 days of journals, attempting to put some pictures on Facebook, and uploading the rest to Flickr. Had a great chat [read more]
