Information

Located in Africa, Kenya (formally called the Republic of Kenya) can be found at Latitude: -1.283333 and Longitutde: 36.816667 occupying 580,367 sq/km of area. At last count, Kenya has the population of 39,070,000 residents (with an annual 2.70% growth rate) who are known as Kenyan(s).

The Flag for Kenya

The East African country of Kenya rises from a low coastal plain on the Indian Ocean to mountains and plateaus at its center. Most Kenyans live in the highlands, and Nairobi, the capital, is here at an altitude of 1,700 meters (5,500 feet). Even though Nairobi is near the Equator, its high elevation brings cooler air. To the west of Nairobi the land descends to the north-south?running Great Rift Valley the valley floor is at its lowest near Lake Turkana. Most of northern and eastern Kenya consists of rugged desert or semiarid grasslands. More than 40 ethnic groups, including Kikuyu farmers and Masai cattle herders, crowd the countryside, still home to three-quarters of Kenya's people. About 75 percent of Kenyans work in agriculture, most as subsistence farmers. Intense competition for arable land drives thousands to cities, where unemployment is high. In Nairobi, East Africa's commercial hub, skyscrapers abruptly give way to slums. Both free enterprise and a measure of political debate helped make Kenya one of Africa's most stable nations after it achieved independence from Britain in 1963. Tourism is essential to the economy, and Kenya is one of Africa's major safari destinations. The tourism industry bounced back after the 1998 Nairobi bomb attacks but declined after post-election violence in 2007 and 2008. Remittances, tea, and horticulture (cut flowers, processed fruits and vegetables) are also key contributors to the economy.

22% of Kenyan(s) live in urban centers, and 85% can read and write one of the many languages such as English, Kiswahili, many indigenous languages. Kenyan(s) have an average life expectancy rate of 54 years and most follow the Protestant, Roman Catholic, Muslim, indigenous beliefs religions. 75% Agriculture of Kenyan(s) work in the agriculture industry which produces , and 25% Industry & Services work in the industry producing small-scale consumer goods, agricultural products, horticulture, oil refining, aluminum, steel, lead, cement, ship repair, tourism. Another work in the services sector such as tourism and retail environments. tea, horticultural products, coffee, petroleum products, fish, cement are regularly exported to other countries in the world from Kenya. The Gross Domestic Product per capita is $1,600 with 2% annual growth.

Kenya uses the telephone country code of 254 and internet hosts use the .ke suffix. Kenya uses the Shilling (KES).

Currency

although the latter was not demonetized until 1969. The Central Bank of Kenya issued notes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 shillings. All of the notes feature a portrait of Kenya’s first prime minister and president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, on the front and diverse economic activities on the back. 5 shillings notes were replaced by coins in 1985, with the same happening to 10 and 20 shillings in 1994 and 1998. In 1986, 200 shillings notes were introduced, followed by 500 shillings in 1988 and 1000 shillings in 1994. As with the coins, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta appeared on the banknotes issued until 1978, with Daniel arap Moi's portrait replacing him in 1980. In 2003, after Mwai Kibaki replaced Moi as president, 5, 10, and 20 shilling notes from the 1978 series with Kenyatta's picture that had been in storage were issued, and circulated for a time. A new series of notes was then introduced on which Kenyatta reappeared with denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 shilling. The issue of 12 December 2003 commemorates the "40 years of Independence 1963-2003". The banknotes are printed in Nairobi by De La Rue. The smallest circulating shilling note as of 2012 is the 20 note which shows the coat of arms of Kenya with Danitel Toroitch arap Moi, with a picture of a baton and a jogger at the International Sports Arena located in Nairobi.

My Experience

I stayed in Kenya way longer than I should have. But I needed to work on a book to be published and I injured myself in the process. It's what I thikn alot of Africa will be like in 20 more years, Nairobi, the capital is a mess of people, but there always seems to be something to do. Mombasa is popular with tourists, hotter than hell, and some of the parks offer scenic looks at animals and rock sculptures. Recommended.

Road Conditions: Tarred roads have wide shoulders, albiet a bit dirty.
Hills: Grades reasonable, not too extreme like some other countries.
Weather: Sunny, cloudy, with bits of rain when I visited. Beware the Sun is so intense that even though I've been in the sun for over 3 years daily My whole skin burned and peeled in one day int his sun!
Best Beer: Tusker
