Lesotho is a small, mountainous country encircled by the Republic of South Africa. It lies mostly within the Drakensberg mountain range. Lowlands, in the western part of the country, hold 70 percent of the population and the capital city, Maseru. Only 13 percent of the land can be farmed. In the early 19th century Basuto Chief Moshoeshoe united tribes in this mountainous land. To establish a buffer against Boer (Dutch farmer) expansion, the chief put his kingdom, Basutoland, under British protection in 1868. Lesotho became independent in 1966, but civil unrest brought military rule in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1993 it became a constitutional monarchy. Water and diamonds are Lesotho's major natural resources. The Lesotho Highlands Water Project has completed two dams that generate electricity and channel water to the Republic of South Africa. The sale of water, diamonds, and textiles provides most of Lesotho's income.
